For self-drive, choose your rental length and cover. Zero Excess gives the highest self-drive protection. On guided journeys, your driver-guide drives, so self-drive excess cover is not required.

Recommended protection: Choose Zero Excess for the highest level of cover and the least financial exposure during your trip.

How does insurance or excess work?

Self-drive rentals use the excess options shown here. On guided journeys, your driver-guide drives the vehicle, so you do not select a self-drive insurance tier. See the Insurance page for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical information for a smooth self-drive journey in Namibia.

Need a specific answer? Message us directly and we can help with vehicle collection, driving requirements, route planning and insurance questions.
How old do I need to be to rent a vehicle?

The minimum age to rent a vehicle with us is 23 years.

Where do I pickup the vehicle?

Windhoek hotel, Airbnb and agreed Windhoek handovers are included. Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) is N$750 one way or N$1,400 return for 1–7 day rentals. For 8–13 days, one WDH airport leg is included; for 14+ days, return WDH handover is included. Walvis Bay and other non-standard locations are quoted separately.

What are the payment terms?

Once your invoice is issued, a 50% payment confirms your booking. The remaining 50% can be settled at vehicle handover.

How does the security pre-authorisation work?

Your selected insurance excess is used as the credit-card pre-authorisation: N$40,000 for Standard Excess, N$20,000 for Reduced Excess, and N$0 for Zero Excess. A pre-authorisation is a temporary hold, not a charge. Release timing depends on your bank or card issuer after the vehicle is successfully returned. Charges for excluded damage or other amounts due under the rental agreement may still apply.

What is the fuel policy?

Our fuel policy is full-to-full. Your Hilux is supplied with a full tank of diesel and should be returned with a full tank.

Can I take the vehicle across the border?

Yes, with advance approval. Botswana or South Africa is N$1,200 per rental. Botswana + South Africa on the same rental is N$1,800. Other countries are quoted individually. Government border levies, third-party insurance and similar external charges are separate unless specifically included.

Do I need an International Driver's Permit (IDP) to rent a vehicle?

Most travelers do not need an International Driver’s License or Permit. If your home country’s driver’s license is in English, valid, and includes your photo and signature, it is accepted in Namibia.

If your license is not in English or uses non-Roman characters, you will need to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your original license. For added peace of mind, we recommend having an IDP when traveling across borders or remote areas.

What side of the road do you drive on in Namibia, and is it difficult to learn?

In Namibia, vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road, with the steering wheel on the right. For travelers coming from countries where driving is on the right, it’s easy to adapt after a short time. The most common adjustment is reaching for the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal, but most drivers get used to it within the first day on the road.

What is the quality of Namibia's roads?

Namibia has some of the best roads in Africa, with smooth highways and well-maintained gravel routes that make it easy and safe to travel between all major attractions. The roads are reliable, clearly marked, and perfect for self-drive trips year-round.

Can I drive at night or when it is dark out?

For your safety, driving after dark is not allowed. Namibia’s roads, while excellent during the day, can become dangerous at night due to free-roaming wildlife, livestock, and the lack of street lighting outside urban areas.

Even experienced drivers find it difficult to spot animals in time to react safely. We strongly recommend planning your travel so you arrive at your next lodge, campsite, or town before sunset. This helps ensure both your safety and a relaxed, stress-free journey.
