01Day 1Sandwich Harbour: Dunes Meet the AtlanticCheck in at the waterfront for a four-hour scenic 4x4 excursion. Begin with the Walvis Bay lagoon, continue into the coastal dune landscape and stop for views and refreshments. The guide selects the safe permitted route; a high tide may mean overlooking Sandwich Harbour rather than reaching the lagoon along the beach. Return to Walvis Bay with the rest of the day available for the coast.
Meet at the waterfront
Arrive before the confirmed departure at the Walvis Bay Waterfront and meet your guide. Discuss any back problems, pregnancy, mobility restrictions or anxiety about steep dune driving before boarding. Pack a warm layer as well as sun protection; coastal fog and inland heat can occur on the same outing. If you are staying in Swakopmund, the separate transfer must be included in your arrangements. The guide explains how weather, tides and access shape the route before leaving town.

Begin around the Walvis Bay lagoon and the wider coastal landscape, stopping where conditions allow for birdwatching and photographs. Flamingos and other waterbirds may gather in changing numbers through the year. Listen to the guide’s explanation of the relationship between wetland, desert and ocean before the route continues south. Keep the camera ready but avoid making wildlife the only measure of the outing: the colours, salt workings and broad horizons are an important part of this coast.

Continue with your specialist driver into the high dunes and toward Sandwich Harbour. When beach conditions permit, the route may reach the lagoon by the shore; otherwise the guide uses suitable viewpoints and approved tracks. Step out only where directed and allow time to take in the scale of the dune face against the sea. This experience is a passenger excursion, so there is no need to test your own rental vehicle or negotiate unfamiliar tides.

Pause for the refreshments specified in your quote at a location selected by the guide. The operator markets oysters and other snacks, with alternatives requested in advance for allergies or dietary preferences. Enjoy the setting without leaving waste or disturbing the fragile ground. Continue on the chosen dune route and return to the waterfront. A sunset photography departure or longer full-day version can be requested, but these are separate choices with different timing and conditions.
