Frequently Asked Insurance Questions (FAQs)

Generally, external insurance policies - such as those available through credit cards or providers like rentalcover.com - are not valid in Namibia. Even if a claim occurs and is initially covered, damages must be paid upfront and then reimbursed after. Many customers have reported difficulties obtaining these reimbursements, which often require substantial evidence and delays.

Insurance mainly covers accidents and theft under normal, responsible use β€” but excludes neglect, misuse, and off-road incidents. Tyre and Windscreen Insurance or Zero Excess (Full Coverage) is required to cover Tyre and Windscreen damage.

The following items are not covered under insurance, regardless of excess/coverage option:

In most cases, insurance is only valid within the borders of Namibia. If you are travelling to any neighboring countries, supplemental insurance and conditions will be discussed during booking.

In case of an accident, it must immediately be reported to the police and to Zumi Rentals and Tours. Failure to do so within 24 hours may void your insurance coverage.

NAMPOL (Namibian Police Force) is the official authority for all traffic and accident reports. Always report to the nearest NAMPOL police station in the area where the accident occurred. Every town and regional centre (e.g., Windhoek, Swakopmund, Etosha Gate, etc.) has a NAMPOL station.

In rural or park areas, report at the nearest outpost or ranger station, and ask them to direct you to the closest official NAMPOL officer.

Insurance can be upgraded to a higher tier (for example, Standard Excess to Reduced Excess) at any point during your trip. The additional cost will be added to each remaining rental day. Requests to upgrade coverage must be made in writing to bookings@zumirentals.com

Unfortunately, insurance coverage downgrades are not permitted during your trip.
