Practical information for a smooth self-drive journey in Namibia.
How old do I need to be to rent a vehicle?
The minimum age to rent a vehicle with us is 23 years, and the maximum age is 70 years.
Where do I pickup the vehicle?
For your convenience, we can deliver your vehicle directly to your Airbnb, hotel, or meet you at the airport upon arrival. There is no additional cost for delivery or pickup anywhere within the Windhoek area.
Do I need an International Driver's Permit (IDP) to rent a vehicle?
Most travelers do not need an International Driver’s License or Permit. If your home country’s driver’s license is in English, valid, and includes your photo and signature, it is accepted in Namibia.
If your license is not in English or uses non-Roman characters, you will need to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your original license. For added peace of mind, we recommend having an IDP when traveling across borders or remote areas.

What side of the road do you drive on in Namibia, and is it difficult to learn?
In Namibia, vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road, with the steering wheel on the right. For travelers coming from countries where driving is on the right, it’s easy to adapt after a short time. The most common adjustment is reaching for the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal, but most drivers get used to it within the first day on the road.
What is the quality of Namibia's roads?
Namibia has some of the best roads in Africa, with smooth highways and well-maintained gravel routes that make it easy and safe to travel between all major attractions. The roads are reliable, clearly marked, and perfect for self-drive trips year-round.

Can I drive at night or when it is dark out?
For your safety, driving after dark is not allowed. Namibia’s roads, while excellent during the day, can become dangerous at night due to free-roaming wildlife, livestock, and the lack of street lighting outside urban areas.
Even experienced drivers find it difficult to spot animals in time to react safely. We strongly recommend planning your travel so you arrive at your next lodge, campsite, or town before sunset. This helps ensure both your safety and a relaxed, stress-free journey.
